Inspired by the Squash Blossom necklaces of the Navajo, Hopi, and Zunis of the American Southwest, this necklace uses vintage glass Mali wedding beads hanging from copper wire wrapped YKK zippers. Because I love zebras, the Mali wedding beads remind me of zebra stripes, especially of my favorite zebra, the Grevys zebra. The Grevys zebra, native to Samburu, Kenya, is an endangered species. A variety of brass beads frame my interpretation of a squash blossom. The most spectacular bead is the Ghana brass beads made from throwaway metals of big industrial companies and everyday items such as locks and padlocks. The intricate brass beads are made by the lost wax method which dates back to 9th Century Nigeria. Necklace is strung on a leather cord.
